Philips, Banner Health agree to 15-year partnership
AMSTERDAM, the Netherlands – Royal Philips and Banner Health have signed a 15-year agreement to expand on their joint connected health care programs.
“If we are to make a difference in patient’s lives, we need to work collaboratively with innovative technology partners such as Philips,” said Peter Fine, president and CEO of Banner Health, in a statement.
The agreement leverages Philips’ knowledge and research in connected care and population health management (PHM) and Banner’s deep clinical and operational insights to identify and deliver integrated solutions that are intended to improve the health of Banner’s patients. The partnership will look to create best practices that enable Banner to improve the patient experience and, ultimately, transform healthcare for patients across the Southwest.
As part of the agreement, Banner and Philips will create a governance structure that will allow both organizations to identify solution delivery projects and innovative technologies that can help improve the patient experience and outcomes. They intend to look at how the healthcare network can take a more connected approach to care, such as cardiology by incorporating advanced imaging and interventional technologies, genomics, digital pathology and data analytics.
In addition, as part of the agreement, they will evaluate innovative services and business models that may enable Banner to adopt the latest in healthcare technologies, regardless of vendor.
“We have always taken a long-term view of our business, and realized very early on that the current healthcare system was not sustainable,” said Fine. “With legislation driving reform, we knew that we needed to manage population health and essentially keep people healthy and out of the system to reduce costs, while ensuring better patient outcomes.”
Headquartered in Phoenix, Banner Health is one of the largest, nonprofit health care systems in the United States, managing 28 acute care hospitals, the Banner Health Network and Banner Medical Group, long-term care centers, outpatient surgery centers and an array of other facilities that offer family, home care and hospice, and nursing services. It operates in six states: Arizona, California, Colorado, Nebraska, Nevada and Wyoming.
Common Sensing, Welkin team to improve insulin adherence
SAN FRANCISCO – Common Sensing has partnered with digital health company Welkin Health to offer a new program designed to improve insulin adherence for diabetes patients.
“The program we’re developing with Welkin will provide a critical element that is missing from home insulin delivery—a human touch,” said James White, president and co-founder of Common Sensing, in a statement.
The program will combine data from insulin dosing, data wirelessly transmitted from Common Sensing’s Gocap, real-time insulin pen cap, and data from Welkin Health coaches who will work closely to support patients in the context of their daily lives.
If a patient is taking the wrong amount of insulin or misses a dose, they will be contacted by a Certified Diabetes Educator who can work with the patient ro resolve the issue.
“Data-driven, real-time intervention from coaches will set insulin users up for success between doctor visits, improving the health of people living with diabetes,” said White.
Welkin’s platform uses a rules engine to identify triggers, such as a drop in glucose levels or a missed insulin dose, and prompt the Certified Diabetes Educators to offer real-time feedback and coaching to the patient.
“Adherence challenges continue to be an issue for people managing diabetes, yet research shows individuals who receive health coaching are likely to be more consistent and adherent to medication,” said Chase Hensel, CEO and co-founder of Welkin Health, in a statement. “The real-time data that care teams will receive through our program, as well as the ability to react swiftly when prompted, will afford more opportunities to keep patients on track with insulin regimens and, we believe, vastly improve insulin adherence and overall health outcomes.”
TeleTech, Welltok form partnership
DENVER – TeleTech Holdings, a provider of customer experience, engagement and growth solutions, and Welltok, a consumer health Software as a Service company, will work together to help population managers guide consumers to health options. “By partnering with a tech-savvy contact center conversant in the diverse and dynamic needs of the health care market, we are adding new and enhanced communications capabilities to make the right connections, at the right time,” said Rob Scavo, president and COO of Welltok, in a statement. TeleTech’s live agent services are coordinated and integrated with Welltok’s multi-channel communications campaigns to maximize the effectiveness of outreach campaigns. Welltok’s analytics will trigger a live interaction when necessary. “This partnership will enable health care consumers to be contacted in the way that works best for them—whether that is on the phone, through a text message, email or traditional mail—which greatly increases the effectiveness of the communication,” said Judi Hand, executive vice president of TeleTech, in a statement.
FDA clears CANTAB Mobile memory tool
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has given clearance to Cambridge Cognition to market its CANTAB Mobile memory assessment tool. “There is a great unmet need for effective near patient assessment tools to assess memory impairment,” said Dr Steven Powell, CEO of Cambridge Cognition, in a statement. “Access to the large U.S. healthcare market, combined with the recent investment in our U.S. operation, will help underpin the company’s revenues and its continued growth.” CANTAB Mobile is designed to detect clinically-relevant memory impairment in older adults at the point of care. It includes a computerized test of visuospatial associative learning to assess episodic memory, with optional mood and functional assessments, to help detect symptoms of depression and problems with performing regular activities of daily living. The touchscreen test, which takes under 10 minutes to complete, can be self-administered using voiceover instructions in more than 20 languages with automatic scoring accounting for age, gender and education level. All results can be accessed in a simple to interpret, one-page physician’s report using a traffic-light output for memory and mood outputs.
Stanford study finds new wearables play important role in managing health
STANFORD, Calif. – Wearable sensors may be able to detect illnesses like Lyme disease and diabetes, a Stanford University study has found.
“A new wave of wearable sensors allows frequent and continuous measurements of body functions (physiology), including heart rate, skin temperature, blood oxygen levels and physical activity,” the researchers wrote. “We investigated the ability of wearable sensors to follow physiological changes that occur over the course of a day, during illness and other activities. Data from these sensors revealed personalized differences in daily patterns of activities.”
Researchers found that wearable sensors helped identify the onset of Lyme disease and inflammation. The sensors also revealed physiological differences between insulin-sensitive and insulin-resistant individuals, “raising the possibility that these sensors could help detect risk for Type 2 diabetes.”
The team of Stanford researchers first studied a 58-year-old male with seven devices measuring heart rate, skin temperature, sleep, activity, weight and radiation exposure over 24 months. They then analyzed a larger group of participants to examine the consistency of their findings.
“Overall, these results indicate that the information provided by wearable sensors is physiologically meaningful and actionable,” wrote the researchers. “Wearable sensors are likely to play an important role in managing health.”
Philips, Bon Secours Health System partnership aims to transform delivery of healthcare
