NEW YORK, N.Y. – Northwell Health has received a $1.5 million grant from the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute to study the benefits of home-based pulmonary rehabilitation. Northwell’s Feinstein Institute for Medical Research will study Hispanic patients with moderate to severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and whether home-based pulmonary rehabilitation improves their quality of life and decreases hospitalization. The study will include the use of a stationary bicycle and a tablet that patients will use for their remote, online rehab sessions with a respiratory therapist. The RT will go through exercises with a least four patients in their own homes each session. The study will look at whether telehealth led to better outcomes compared to standard rehabilitation program referrals.
