SAN JOSE, Calif. –Paradromics has raised $7 million to add to more than $18 million in research funding from the Defense Advances Research Projects Agency as part of the agency’s Neural Engineering System Design program. The company is developing brain-machine interface (BMI) technology designed to allow patients with severe connectivity disorders like blindness, deafness and paralysis to reconnect with the outside world using advanced prosthetic devices. One of the initial applications of the technology will be to enable patients with locked-in syndrome, a condition in which a patient is aware but cannot move or communicate verbally due to complete paralysis of nearly all voluntary muscles in the body except for vertical eye movements and blinking, to speak again in real time with the aid of a computer. “The high-bandwidth feature of our technology has revolutionary implications for the field of neuro-prosthetics and beyond,” said Matt Angle, founder and CEO of Paradromics, in a statement. “The financial backing and strategic expertise of our investors will help us expand the team, grow the IP portfolio and more rapidly execute our technical development plan.” Enke Bashllari, managing director of Arkitekt Ventures, one of the investors, has joined the Paradromics board of directors.
