DUBLIN – Medtronic will integrate data from Garmin directly into its remote patient monitoring platform, allowing patients and their care teams to better manage their health from home.
Medtronic was the first to help launch and adopt the new Garmin Health software development kit (SDK) by syncing data from the vivofit activity tracker into the Medtronic Care Management Services NetResponse mobile app.
“We are excited to bring this unique integration into our industry-leading service to help enhance the health care and post-discharge recovery support care providers can give to their patients, especially those living with chronic conditions,” said Sheri Dodd, vice president and general manager of MCMS, in a statement.
By using technology, connected data and personalized care coordination, clinicians may be able to more efficiently evaluate patient health information, consider early intervention points and avoid unnecessary health utilization, said Dodd.
With the new integration, a Garmin vivofit activity tracker is now included as one of the Bluetooth-connected peripheral device options that providers can choose for their patients through MCMS’s remote monitoring services. Activity data from the tracker will sync to NetResponse, giving clinicians further patient context beyond biometrics and other patient-reported symptoms already collected through MCMS’s disease management programs.
Because Garmin’s device is water-resistant and has a long battery life, it helps to increase usage for patients participating in the remote monitoring program, because they rarely have to remove the device.
“Combining the benefits of Garmin activity trackers with our SDK reduces friction for patients, so Medtronic can use a single interface to collect data,” said Dan Bartel, vice president of Garmin Worldwide Sales, in a statement.
